"To avoid simultaneous appearances of Kegel’s and Konitz’s altos, they wisely arrange to have Kegel on flute or tenor when Konitz is on alto, and Konitz on soprano when Kegel plays alto. Konitz inspires a lyrical mood for all involved. Lee’s performances are world-class, as are Hagen’s and Kegel’s, really- with nice moments for Kegel on flute and tenor as well as the alto. There are some great moments – Konitz’s alto and Hagen’s guitar on "Ghost Of A Chance", Kegel’s flute on "Lee’s April", Konitz’s soprano and Hagen’s guitar on "Stardust", Kegel’s alto on "Indian Summer", the tenor and alto duet on "Movin’ Around". Thinking about it a little more, there is much to like about this CD. Konitz fans will no doubt see in it what Parker fans do in "Bird with Strings". Beyond that there are three soloists to appreciate: Konitz, Kegel, and Hagen – all masters of their idiom."

"Konzertant" ist East of the sun in doppelter Hinsicht: Zum einen handelt es sich um einen Live-Mitschnitt und zum zweiten verdient auch die Musik des Trios dieses Prädikat. Wie durch die Art der Besetzung zu erwarten, hat der Vortrag viel Transparenz und Raum, den die Musiker genial zu nutzen wissen. Sehr angenehm auch die immerwährende Balance des Trios. Axel Hagen’s kreative Begleitung trägt wesentlich zur Struktur bei. Seine Soli sind erfrischend, gleichermassen melodiös, virtuos und schön akkordisch (Anspieltip: Lullaby of the leaves). Sein percussiver, trockener und klarer Ton kommt in dieser Besetzung sehr schön zur Geltung. Ausgezeichnet!
